Milecastle 1, Roman milecastle in Tyne and Wear, England
The stone fortification measures approximately 15 meters by 18 meters, with walls reaching up to 3 meters in thickness at Hadrian's Wall.
Roman soldiers constructed this defensive structure in 122 AD as part of Emperor Hadrian's initiative to establish control over the northern British territories.
The milecastle contains archaeological evidence of Roman military life, including cooking areas, sleeping quarters, and storage spaces for supplies and weapons.
The remains of Milecastle 1 are accessible through marked paths from Newcastle upon Tyne, with informational panels explaining the structure's layout.
This fortification marks the easternmost milecastle of Hadrian's Wall, positioned strategically near the River Tyne's original northern bank.
