Market Estate, Public housing estate in Holloway, United Kingdom
Market Estate is a housing complex in Holloway containing around 270 flats and maisonettes spread across six low-rise residential blocks. The site sits near Caledonian Park and features a Victorian clock tower that stands as a remnant from the land's previous use.
The estate was built in 1967 on the grounds of a former livestock market, replacing most of the previous structures on the site. The Victorian clock tower with mechanisms similar to Big Ben was preserved from that earlier period.
The 2010 art project brought temporary creative uses to empty flats before redevelopment, showing how the estate could serve as a canvas for local expression. This event demonstrated the community's engagement with the transformation of their neighborhood.
The estate is easily accessible and located near public transport links and green space including the nearby park. The residential blocks are pedestrian-friendly with clear pathways and good orientation between buildings.
Six residential blocks are named after animals that were once traded at the former market: Tamworth for pigs, Kerry for cattle, and Southdown for sheep. These names keep the site's agricultural history alive within the modern housing development.
