Mid-Norfolk Railway, Heritage railway in Norfolk, England

Mid-Norfolk Railway is a heritage railway running through the rural county of Norfolk, linking the towns of Dereham and Wymondham along a route of 11 miles (18 kilometers). The trains pass through fields, small villages and woodland areas, using steam and diesel locomotives that pull restored carriages from different periods.

The line opened in 1847 as part of the expansion of the rail network across eastern England, originally connecting Norwich with the Midlands. Regular passenger service ended in 1964 during nationwide line closures, before railway enthusiasts gradually reopened sections from the nineteen-nineties onward.

The preserved Victorian station buildings house collections of signaling equipment and maintenance tools from the steam era. Visitors can climb into the original signal box at Dereham station and see how switches were operated by hand in earlier times.

Trains run on selected weekends and during school holidays, with departure times varying depending on the season. It is best to plan ahead, as some operating days are reserved for special events or maintenance work.

At County School station, a former school bus from the nineteen-sixties has been converted into a café where travelers can enjoy tea and cakes. On some journeys, the railway operates historic dining carriages where meals are served during the ride.
