Midhope Castle, Tower house in West Lothian, Scotland
Midhope Castle is a five-story tower house built from stone in West Lothian. The structure features three corners with two-story bartizans and a corner tower that houses the staircase.
Alexander Drummond and his wife Marjorie Bruce modified the tower in 1587, leaving their initials carved above the gateway. This renovation marked a significant moment in the building's development.
The castle exterior became known worldwide as Lallybroch, the fictional family home of Jamie Fraser in the television series Outlander. Visitors often recognize the building from its role in the show and the scenes filmed at this location.
The site can be reached through the Hopetoun estate grounds, though interior access remains restricted due to structural issues. Plan to explore the exterior and enjoy the building's architecture from outside.
A painted ceiling from inside the tower has been preserved and will be displayed at the Palace of Holyroodhouse for public viewing. This restoration allows visitors to see original interior details that are otherwise hidden from view.
