Monmouth Beach

Monmouth Beach is a pebble beach along the Jurassic Coast near Lyme Regis, stretching roughly one mile with steep cliffs rising above it. The shore is composed of pebbles and rocks, exposing layers of ancient geological formations that visitors can examine.

The beach gained historical importance in 1685 when the Duke of Monmouth landed here in an attempt to claim the English throne. His defeat resulted in severe consequences for the local community.

The beach draws visitors who look for fossils among the rocks and cliffs, making fossil hunting a common sight here. This activity has become part of the local character and attracts people interested in the natural history around them.

The beach is easily reached from Lyme Regis with parking available above the coast and a short walk down to reach it. Access is best at moderate tides since the shore narrows considerably when the tide rises.

Beyond fossil hunting, the beach sits between two notable geographical features and offers striking coastal views that change with the light throughout the day. The exposed rock layers tell stories of ancient marine life from millions of years ago.
