Sgairneach Mhòr, Mountain summit in Cairngorms National Park, Scotland
Sgairneach Mhòr is a mountain in the Cairngorms with a height of around 1000 meters and a notable summit plateau offering views toward neighboring mountain groups. The southern slopes descend gradually while pronounced ridges extend toward the north and east.
The mountain is part of a group of seven Munros near the Pass of Drumochter, which have long served as natural landmarks for travelers crossing the highlands. This region has been an important passage between northern and southern Scotland for centuries.
The name comes from Scottish Gaelic meaning 'Big Rocky Hillside', describing the stone-covered slopes that define the mountain. Local hikers recognize it as a landmark that separates two distinct regions of the highlands.
Hikers reach the summit via a marked trail starting from below 500 meters at Drumochter Pass, following the eastern ridge route. The ascent crosses open slopes without major obstacles and the route remains clearly visible throughout.
The summit holds a stone wind shelter built around a survey marker, allowing clear-day views toward the Ben Alder mountain group. This shelter has become a landmark in itself, built gradually by hikers over time.
