Naze, Peninsula and cape in Tendring, England.

The Naze is a cape and headland on the North Sea coast in Tendring, England, shaped by tall cliffs made up of layers of clay and sand. The area is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and features walking paths along the clifftops with open views over the water.

This headland served as a navigation point for ships sailing along the English coast during the medieval period. In the early 1700s, a tower was built on the clifftop to make the landmark more visible to passing vessels.

The Naze Tower, rising above the cliffs, has long been a reference point for sailors and locals alike, and today it remains a familiar landmark along this stretch of coast. Visitors can climb it for a view over the surrounding landscape and the sea below.

The area is easy to explore on foot, with marked paths along the clifftops that are accessible to most visitors. Coastal erosion is ongoing here, so it is best to stay on the marked routes and keep a safe distance from the cliff edges.

The clay and sand layers of the cliffs contain fossils from around 50 million years ago, when this part of England lay beneath a tropical sea. Fossil hunters regularly visit the beach below the cliffs, where new specimens can appear after storms or high tides.
