Hywind Scotland, World's first commercial wind farm using floating wind turbines, in the North Sea off the Scottish coast
Hywind Scotland is a floating wind farm with five turbines located in the North Sea, approximately 25 kilometers off the coast of Peterhead, Scotland. The turbines stand on spar buoy structures anchored in water deeper than 90 meters and are designed to move slightly with waves while remaining secure through mooring lines.
Construction began in late 2016 and the farm started operating in October 2017 as the world's first floating wind farm. The project drew on nearly fifty years of offshore oil industry expertise, which facilitated the development and installation of the turbines.
The farm is located about 25 kilometers offshore and can be seen from the Scottish coast on clear days. The best vantage point is from the coastline near Peterhead, where you can observe the turbines from a distance.
The turbines generate enough electricity to power around 35,000 UK homes, and since starting operations, the farm has achieved the highest average capacity factor among British offshore wind farms. This demonstrates that floating turbines can operate with exceptional efficiency even in rough sea conditions.
