Nutbourne Windmill

Nutbourne Windmill, 19th-century tower windmill in Pulborough, England

Nutbourne Windmill is a five-story brick tower with a distinctive beehive cap and four spring sails positioned at the first-floor level. The structure once contained two pairs of grinding stones that processed grain using wind-driven power.

The mill was built in 1854 and operated for grinding grain until 1894, when it fell into disuse. Its period of decline led to damage that eventually halted all milling operations.

The structure represents how people once used wind power for their daily work in this region. It shows the engineering knowledge that local craftspeople possessed during that era.

The site now functions as a tasting room and shop for a local vineyard, allowing visitors to sample and purchase wine products. The grounds are accessible through a standard entrance where you can move around the property comfortably.

The windshaft of the mill apparatus still hangs vertically at the tower top, supported only by brackets after the tail beam system failed. This unusual arrangement is a visible reminder of the building's period of decline.
