Nene Washes

Nene Washes is a large wetland reserve stretching along the River Nene with shallow pools, grassland, and diverse habitats for wildlife. The area includes drainage channels and functions as a flood storage system for the river.

The area was reshaped in past centuries through human effort to manage flooding along the River Nene. These water control measures eventually created a landscape that became important for wildlife conservation.

People in the area are deeply connected to the site through regular birdwatching and wildlife observation. This hands-on relationship with nature shapes how locals think about and value this landscape.

The reserve is accessible from Nene Way road, located east of the B1040 main road. Early mornings offer the best conditions for seeing birds, especially during spring and autumn migration periods.

The drainage channels here are home to a rare fish species called the spined loach, which makes this site specially protected. This small fish population is a key reason why the area receives its conservation status.
