Phoenix Garden, Community garden in St Giles, England
Phoenix Garden is a community space situated on converted land between Soho and Covent Garden in central London. The site contains plantings, flower beds, and vegetable patches alongside habitats for local insects and birds.
The garden was established in 1984 on a former car park site that had previously been damaged during World War II bombing. This transformation represents the conversion of derelict land into an active community space.
The garden serves as a meeting place where neighbors gather to grow vegetables and share gardening knowledge together. Local workers and residents use the space to connect with nature and each other amid the busy city surroundings.
The site sits north of Shaftesbury Avenue and east of Charing Cross Road, within easy walking distance of major London transit hubs. Visitors can enter freely from sunrise to sunset, though uneven ground means sturdy footwear is advisable.
This garden is the sole survivor of seven original Covent Garden community gardens and has won multiple local gardening awards. These recognitions highlight its importance as green space within one of London's oldest and busiest neighborhoods.
