Parrett Iron Works, Industrial heritage site in Martock, England
Parrett Iron Works is a four-story factory building constructed from squared stone and topped with slate roofing, featuring cast-iron windows across its facade. The structure displays typical industrial architecture of the period, with sturdy walls and solid craftsmanship throughout.
The site began as a snuff mill in the 18th century before being transformed into an iron foundry in 1855. This conversion reflects the shift from small-scale craft production to mechanized industrial manufacturing in the region.
The works served as a vital production center for machinery that powered mills and factories across the wider region. Visitors can still observe the robust structures that demonstrate how skilled craftsmanship and industrial strength were linked together.
The building is protected as a heritage site and located in Martock, easily accessed via local roads. Visitors should note that access may be limited and the exterior is best viewed during daylight hours.
A notable feature is a spiral cast-iron staircase within a separate brick tower, designed specifically for fire safety in the 19th century. This thoughtful safety measure shows how seriously factory operators took fire protection in that era.
