Posbury, Iron Age contour fort in Crediton Hamlets, England
Posbury is an Iron Age contour fort in Crediton Hamlets, built on a hilltop and surrounded by earth ramparts. The structure follows the natural shape of the land, with banks and ditches that encircle the elevated area to create a defensive boundary.
The fort dates to the Iron Age and served as a strategic location for defense purposes. In the 7th century, the site played a military role during conflicts that took place in the region.
Archaeological excavations at Posbury have uncovered numerous artifacts that reveal details about daily life in ancient British settlements.
The site is best reached on foot using nearby pathways that lead to the elevated area. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for uneven ground throughout the visit.
The land later became home to a school for deaf children after Charlotte Mordaunt studied specialized teaching methods in Paris in the 1800s.
