Posbury, Iron Age contour fort in Crediton Hamlets, England

The fortification consists of earthwork structures that partially enclose a hilltop situated 180 meters above sea level near Crediton.

In 661 AD, King Cenwalh of Wessex used this strategic location as a battle site to push native Briton tribes from central Devon toward the coast.

Archaeological excavations at Posbury have uncovered numerous artifacts that reveal details about daily life in ancient British settlements.

The site stands 2 miles southwest of Crediton and 2 miles north of Tedburn St Mary, with access paths leading to the elevated fortification area.

The land later became home to a school for deaf children after Charlotte Mordaunt studied specialized teaching methods in Paris in the 1800s.
