RNAS Machrihanish, Former Royal Naval Air Station in Campbeltown, Scotland.
The naval station extends across the western side of the Kintyre Peninsula, featuring a 3049-meter runway that stands as Scotland's longest aircraft landing strip.
Established in 1916 as a maritime patrol base, RNAS Machrihanish operated aircraft and airships before evolving into HMS Landrail during World War II operations.
The facility transformed from a military installation to community ownership in 2012 when local residents purchased the site through Scottish right-to-buy legislation.
The former naval station now houses Campbeltown Airport, which maintains regular flight connections between the Kintyre Peninsula and Glasgow International Airport.
The station's strategic location made it a primary NATO facility during the Cold War, with the United States Navy using it for weapons storage and maintenance.
