RAF Feltwell, Royal Air Force station in Norfolk, United Kingdom
RAF Feltwell is a Royal Air Force station in Norfolk that spans a substantial area and operates under the administration of the 48th Fighter Wing. The base now functions primarily as a residential community for United States Air Force personnel and their families stationed in the region.
The airfield was constructed in the late 1930s and served as a base for heavy bomber squadrons flying Vickers Wellington aircraft during World War II. After the conflict, the installation gradually transformed from an active combat base into an administrative and residential center.
The facility houses the Department of Defense Education Activity offices and the only middle school serving military families from Lakenheath and Mildenhall.
The location is primarily accessible to military personnel and their families and includes housing and educational facilities. Visitors should check in advance about access possibilities since it remains an active military installation.
From 1989 to 2003, the 5th Space Surveillance Squadron operated here, tracking satellites and providing data for orbit adjustment calculations. This specialized mission made the base a key point in satellite monitoring during that period.
