Pitsford Water, Nature reserve and lake in Northamptonshire, United Kingdom.
Pitsford Water is a reservoir in Northamptonshire that combines woodland, meadow, and grassland habitats across its grounds, creating an environment where diverse wildlife can thrive. The water body covers over 400 hectares and features multiple natural zones that support birds, insects, and plants throughout the year.
The reservoir was constructed in 1956 to supply water to Northampton, fundamentally changing the landscape of the area. Its creation required submerging the original Holcot bridge and building a causeway to maintain the crossing over the water.
The reserve maintains multiple bird observation hides along the shoreline, enabling visitors to observe over 60 breeding bird species throughout the seasons.
A hard-surfaced path about seven kilometers long circles the water and is suitable for walkers, cyclists, and wheelchair users. The area is accessible from morning until sunset, allowing flexible visits at different times of day.
Hidden observation hides allow visitors to watch more than 60 breeding bird species in their natural behavior and surroundings. During winter months, thousands of migrating birds such as wigeon and teal gather on the water, making it a prime spot for bird watchers.
