Ripley School Chapel, Gothic Revival chapel at Ripley St Thomas Academy in Lancaster, England

Ripley School Chapel is a Gothic Revival building at Ripley St Thomas Academy in Lancaster with pointed arches, decorative stonework, and an octagonal flèche. The structure features sandstone blocks with Westmorland slate roofing and contains a three-bay south arcade that shapes its interior layout.

Julia Ripley commissioned the chapel in 1884 as part of the Ripley Hospital, which served as a school for children who had lost their fathers at sea. The building emerged during a period when educational institutions across Britain were expanding their facilities to include dedicated spiritual spaces.

Marble busts of Thomas and Julia Ripley greet visitors in the entrance area, while stained glass windows from the Shrigley and Hunt workshops fill the interior with colored light. These artistic touches show how the founders shaped the space's character and purpose.

The chapel can hold around 400 people and hosts regular services and school events throughout the year. Access may be limited on school days, so it is best to check ahead before visiting.

The three-manual pipe organ was built in 1888 by Wilkinson and Sons from Kendal and underwent complete restoration work by Corkhill of Keighley exactly 100 years later. This instrument represents a remarkable example of 19th-century organ craftsmanship.
