Seaham Hall, Grade II listed country house hotel in Seaham, England
Seaham Hall is a late 18th-century country house with white-painted walls, Welsh slate roofs, and refined architectural details throughout. The building sits on about 37 acres of landscaped gardens and operates today as a hotel with dining facilities and event spaces.
The house was built between 1791 and 1792 for Sir Ralph Milbanke and became known for the 1815 wedding of poet Lord Byron to Annabella Milbanke. After the 19th century, the building served as a military hospital during World War I and later as a sanatorium.
The property served multiple functions through time, from a military hospital during World War I to a tuberculosis sanatorium from 1927 onwards.
The hotel is easily reached via the B1287 in County Durham and has generous outdoor areas to explore on the grounds. On-site facilities allow visitors to spend the day at the property without needing to leave the grounds.
The wedding of Lord Byron and Annabella Milbanke at this house led to the birth of their daughter Ada Lovelace, who later became known as a pioneer in the field of computational thinking. Her mathematical writings were ahead of her time and influenced the early development of computing.
