Shelley's Laserdome, Dance music venue in Longton, England
Shelley's Laserdome was a dance music venue in Longton, Staffordshire, England, fitted with a laser system and divided into multiple dance areas. The building was large enough to hold big crowds and was set up specifically for nights of electronic music.
The building started as a roller rink, then served as a theater and cinema before reopening as a dance music venue in 1989. It closed in the mid-1990s as the rave era in Britain came to an end.
Shelley's Laserdome became a gathering point for electronic music fans from across the Midlands and beyond during the early 1990s. The name came from the laser system inside, which was a defining feature of the nights held there.
The venue drew visitors from cities as far away as Manchester and Birmingham, so getting there often involved a longer journey. On busy nights the floors got very crowded, so comfortable shoes were a practical necessity.
In September 1991, Altern 8 played a free, unannounced set in the venue's parking lot, drawing thousands of people who had not expected any show. Police eventually ended the gathering, but the event has become one of the most talked-about moments in British rave history.
