Sherdley Park, Urban park in St Helens, England
Sherdley Park is an urban park in St Helens containing roughly 336 acres of mixed landscapes including woodlands, formal gardens, open grassland, and a lake. The grounds feature both natural areas and maintained garden spaces along with an 18-hole golf course.
The estate was owned by industrialist Michael Hughes in the 19th century, who built a hall on the grounds. After World War II, the local authority acquired the property and transformed it into a public park.
The park became well known for hosting the St Helens Show, which grew into one of Europe's largest free admission public events at its height. This gathering shaped how locals viewed the place and drew people from across the region.
The park is open year-round and features marked walking trails through the woodlands and around the lake suitable for different abilities. Wear sturdy footwear as paths can become muddy, especially after rain.
The formal gardens were established in 1953 and showcase rhododendrons sourced from Kew Gardens, making this one of the first parks outside London to display these plants. The collection remains a distinctive feature that many visitors overlook during their walks.
