Skelbo Castle, Medieval ruins in Dornoch, Scotland.
Skelbo Castle is a medieval fortress located near the mouth of Loch Fleet, positioned at the northern corner of a triangular walled enclosure. The structure combines Norman motte-and-bailey design with features from both the 14th and 17th centuries of Scottish military building.
The castle was established during the Norman expansion into Scotland and evolved over several centuries. A pivotal moment occurred in 1290 when English commissioners received news of Margaret, Maid of Norway's death at the site, fundamentally altering Scottish royal succession.
The fortress represents a Norman motte and bailey design, with elements from both 14th and 17th-century Scottish military architecture.
The site sits in a remote coastal location near Loch Fleet, so sturdy footwear and weather protection are advisable for a visit. The northern section of the wall remains in the best condition, giving a clearer view of medieval construction methods.
The castle's last owner, Mikhail de Buar, passed away in 2009, leading to ongoing legal disputes in Russia over the property.
