Skelmorlie Castle, Category B listed building in North Ayrshire, Scotland.
Skelmorlie Castle is a red sandstone tower that rises through three stories and features corner turrets at its top near the Firth of Clyde. The building blends medieval foundations with later defensive additions and shows signs of various construction phases across its walls.
The tower was built around 1502 as a stronghold for the Montgomery Clan and served as a defensive position in the region. Major changes came around 1636 when a circular angle tower with gun loops was added to strengthen its military capability.
The basement contains vaulted cellars, while the hall above displays a grand fireplace that workers discovered following a structural renovation.
The site is best visited on dry days since damp conditions can make stairs and floors slippery in the tower and around the grounds. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for uneven surfaces and narrow passages inside the structure.
The grounds contain an artificial earthen mound called the Serpent Mound that preserves archaeological artifacts from prehistoric times. Visitors often overlook this mysterious mound since it blends into the surrounding landscape without standing out dramatically.
