South Lakes Safari Zoo, Wildlife conservation center in Lindal in Furness, England.
South Lakes Safari Zoo is an animal park in Lindal in Furness, England, that houses more than a thousand animals from different continents. The facility spreads across several habitats with big cats, giraffes, penguins, and kangaroo enclosures, where the animals are kept in near-natural settings.
The animal park opened its gates in May 1994 and developed over the years into a larger facility with a focus on threatened species. The expansion of enclosures and the addition of new animals shaped the last three decades.
The park takes its name from the nearby lakes and the idea of a safari-like encounter with animals. Visitors experience the species in open enclosures, where kangaroos move freely between the paths and some birds can be seen without barriers.
The park opens daily in the morning and closes in the afternoon, allowing enough time for a full tour. The paths lead through the different zones, some of them with inclines, so comfortable shoes are recommended.
Some visitors are allowed to feed giraffes and penguins themselves at certain times, experiencing direct contact with the animals. These experiences bring people closer to species they would otherwise only see from a distance.
