Square Chapel, Arts centre and former chapel in Halifax, England
Square Chapel is an arts and cultural centre in Halifax housed within a former chapel building. The venue features two performance spaces: the Red Brick Auditorium with approximately 240 seats and the Copper Auditorium with approximately 115 seats used mainly for cinema screenings.
The building was designed as a chapel in 1772 by architects Thomas Bradley and James Kershaw for religious purposes. Over the following centuries it gradually transformed, eventually transitioning from a place of worship into an educational facility and eventually becoming the cultural arts centre it is today.
The centre hosts diverse performances including theatre, live music, comedy shows, and film screenings that draw audiences from across the region regularly. These events have become part of how the local community gathers to experience art and entertainment together.
The centre opens Thursday through Sunday and visitors will find a variety of events and activities scheduled throughout these days. There is a bar and kitchen available on site for those who want to eat or drink while enjoying the programming.
The building retains its original red brick construction, which stands out from the stone architecture commonly seen throughout the Calderdale region. This material choice makes the structure visually distinctive and helps it stand out from nearby buildings.
