Ss Mary & Everilda, Everingham, Catholic church and Grade I listed building in Everingham, England
Ss Mary and Everilda is a Catholic church in Everingham designed in Italian style, featuring stuccoed classical walls and Corinthian columns along the central nave. The interior contains elaborate marble altars with polished granite and porphyry panels, as well as a Charles Allen organ positioned on the high west gallery.
Built between 1836 and 1839 with patronage from William Constable-Maxwell, the church was consecrated in 1839. After serving as a parish church for many decades, it transitioned to the Diocese of Middlesbrough in 2004 while continuing to hold regular services.
Life-size plaster statues of the apostles and carved reliefs showing scenes from Christ's life decorate the interior walls. These works by the Italian artist Luigi Bozzoni shape how the space feels when you walk through it.
The building is generally open to visitors during regular Mass services organized by the Diocese of Middlesbrough. Plan your visit around these times to see the interior at its fullest.
The church houses a rare Charles Allen organ from the 19th century installed on the high west gallery. This instrument is a notable example of English organ building from that era.
