St Chad's Church, Shrewsbury, Anglican church in Shrewsbury, England
St Chad's Church is a circular white stone building with a tall tower situated near Quarry Park in Shrewsbury. The prominent steeple houses twelve bells and the interior features classical Anglican furnishings from the late 1700s.
The present building was completed in 1792 after the tower of the earlier church collapsed in 1788. The original structure had stood for nearly 1000 years before this replacement was constructed.
The church holds memories of Charles Darwin, who was baptized here in 1809 and attended services as a child. This connection to one of history's most influential naturalists draws visitors interested in his early life.
The building is open daily from 8 AM to 4 PM for prayer, visits, and regular Anglican services. Visitors should note that active services take place, so it is helpful to check service times before arriving.
A prop gravestone from the 1984 film adaptation of A Christmas Carol sits in the former churchyard and marks Ebenezer Scrooge's fictional tomb. This unusual piece of film history remains a curious leftover from the production.
