St Edward King and Confessor Catholic Church, Clifford

St Edward King and Confessor is a Catholic church featuring Renaissance Revival architecture in Clifford, built from Magnesian Limestone with a green slate roof and a five-stage west tower with a cylindrical stair-turret. The building displays carefully detailed stonework and a clear structural composition typical of this architectural period.

The church was built between 1845 and 1848 by the Grimston family to serve Catholic workers at their local flax mill. This construction was part of the broader rise of Catholic worship in England after centuries of restriction.

The interior contains stained glass windows created by various artists from the Victorian period, bringing light and color throughout the space.

The church sits on High Street in Clifford and is easy to locate thanks to its distinctive west tower. Visitors should know that regular services take place and parish rooms added for the 150th anniversary are part of the site.

The crypt beneath the Blessed Sacrament chapel holds the remains of Saint Domitia, a child martyr, presented as a gift from Pope Gregory XVI. This reliquary links the church to early Christian traditions and makes it a site of spiritual significance.
