Southern Cemetery, Manchester, Municipal cemetery in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester, England
Southern Cemetery spans about 190 acres with paved pathways, trees, and landscaped grounds divided into sections for different religious communities. Various mortuary chapels and burial areas are distributed across the grounds to serve each faith tradition.
The cemetery opened in 1879 when Manchester Corporation needed more burial space for the growing city. Additional land was acquired in 1926 to continue meeting the city's requirements.
The four mortuary chapels each serve different faith communities—Anglican, Roman Catholic, Nonconformist, and Jewish—reflecting how Manchester's religious groups maintained separate spaces for their ceremonies. Each chapel shows distinct architectural choices that express the values and preferences of the people who built them.
The main entrance at Barlow Moor Road provides parking and access to information services for visitors. The paved pathways make it possible to walk through the grounds, though the size means it helps to have directions or identify landmarks as you go.
The cemetery holds graves of soldiers who died in both World Wars, which are carefully maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. These military burials form a quiet memorial scattered throughout the grounds.
