St George's Church, Brighton, Anglican church in Kemptown, Brighton, England
St George's Church is an Anglican church in Kemptown, Brighton, built with yellow brick in a Neoclassical style. The building displays symmetrical round-headed windows, stucco details, Ionic columns, and a central tower topped with a cupola.
Thomas Read Kemp initiated construction in 1824, and architects Charles Busby and Amon Wilds completed the building in 1825. The project was part of developing Kemptown as a prosperous residential area during the early 1800s.
The church features galleries running along three walls and functions as a community center hosting alternative and folk music performances. This role shows how the building serves both spiritual and artistic needs of the people around it.
The building is accessible through multiple entrances and features modern facilities including a café in the crypt and updated amenities for services and events. Visitors with mobility limitations will find accessibility features throughout the space.
The church's jurisdiction extends well beyond Kemptown to include Brighton Marina, parts of Whitehawk, and Roedean School. This unusually large parish shows how a single church serves a geographically scattered population.
