St Mary's Chapel, Arley, Gothic Revival chapel in Aston by Budworth, United Kingdom
St Mary's Chapel is a church building within the grounds of Arley Hall that features red sandstone construction combined with rendered brick, along with slate and tile roofing. The structure includes a four-bay nave, a north aisle, and an octagonal bell turret.
Anthony Salvin designed this chapel for Rowland Egerton-Warburton, drawing inspiration from the Oxford Movement, with construction completed in September 1845. The building emerged during a period when Gothic Revival architecture was reshaping England's religious and domestic landscapes.
The interior displays carved stone font supported by marble columns, three corona chandeliers, and stained glass windows created by Kempe in 1895.
The chapel sits within the grounds of Arley Hall and opens to visitors during scheduled hours. Regular religious services take place there, so checking ahead ensures you can visit when it suits your plans.
The nave roof rests on corbels decorated with individually crafted angel sculptures, each one holding different shield designs. These carvings add an ornamental layer of detail that reveals the care invested in the chapel's interior.
