St Illtyd's Church, Llantwit Major, Medieval parish church in Llantwit Major, Wales
St Illtyd's Church in Llantwit Major is a religious building with Norman architecture, Celtic crosses, and multiple chapels that is Grade I listed. The complex spans several connected spaces with varying architectural styles from different periods.
Norman builders erected the church in the 11th century on the site of an older religious complex. Major renovations in the 13th and 15th centuries significantly altered its structure and shape its current appearance.
The church holds numerous carved stones and medieval priest effigies that reveal how important this place was to Welsh religious life. Visitors can see these skillfully crafted works and understand the community's commitment to artistic quality.
Access is available during regular opening hours, and the churchyard grounds are easy to navigate on foot. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since paths can be uneven and become slippery in wet weather.
The site contains the remains of what scholars consider the oldest established college in the United Kingdom, dating to around 508. This early foundation shows the place served as an important learning center centuries before the Norman church was built.
