Llantwit Major Town Hall, Grade II* listed municipal building in Llantwit Major, Wales.
Llantwit Major Town Hall is a two-story stone building with mullioned windows and a bell turret at its northeast gable end. The structure combines solid stone walls with detailed architectural features typical of its period.
The building was constructed around 1490 to replace an earlier courthouse founded by Gilbert de Clare, Lord of Glamorgan, in the late 13th century. This construction reflected a shift in how the town managed its administrative and civic functions.
The ground floor has served many purposes over the centuries, including as a school, slaughterhouse, and jail, while the upper floor hosted church gatherings. This varied history shows how the building has been central to community life in different ways.
The northeast section of the ground floor operates as a Tourist Information office, making it easy to gather details about the area before or after exploring the building. Visitors can find helpful local guidance and directions here.
The ancient bell carries a Latin inscription reading 'Sancte Iltute, ora pro nobis', a detail that preserves its spiritual connection. In 1887, townspeople gave it a commemorative clock as a gift.
