St Mary's Church, Hampden Park, Eastbourne, Grade II listed Anglican church in Hampden Park, Eastbourne, England.
St Mary's Church is a Grade II listed Anglican church in Hampden Park featuring white-painted brickwork and distinctive pointed concrete arches. The interior contains north and south aisles that lead to an apsidal chancel at the east end.
The original church built in 1908 was destroyed during a bombing raid in 1940, leaving only the bell tower standing. A new building was constructed following World War II, bringing modern architectural approaches to the site.
The east window displays stained glass made in 1953 by artist Moira Forsyth, who worked closely with architect Edward Maufe on the design. Their partnership shaped how the interior feels and looks to visitors today.
The church is open during daytime hours, offering visitors ample time to explore the interior at a comfortable pace. You can visit for prayer, quiet reflection, or to view the windows and architectural details.
The building displays a surprising blend of Scandinavian design influences mixed with Gothic Revival forms, as interpreted by architect Edward Maufe. This unexpected combination makes the interior a distinctive example of mid-twentieth-century church design.
