Techniquest, Science center in Cardiff Bay, Wales
Techniquest is a science center in Cardiff Bay offering around 100 interactive exhibits covering topics like space exploration, environmental science, and chemistry experiments. The facility also includes a planetarium and science theater where visitors can both explore displays and watch structured presentations.
The center was founded in 1986 by Professor John Beetlestone and colleagues from Cardiff University, initially displaying 48 exhibits in a former British Gas building. The current building, opened in 1995, was the first purpose-built science discovery center of its kind in the United Kingdom.
The center shapes Cardiff Bay's identity as a place for scientific discovery, where visitors engage in hands-on experiments and planetarium shows. It has become a social gathering point where families and school groups regularly come together to explore and learn.
The location on Stuart Street is fully wheelchair accessible with elevators and adapted facilities for all visitors. Parking is available nearby, and the Cardiff Bay location makes it easy to reach by public transport or car.
The building retained its original steel framework from its founding era, making it a notable example of historic structures serving modern purposes. This architectural feature is apparent when entering the building through the visible steel beams and sense of space.
