St. Stephen's Church, Sneinton, Anglican church in Sneinton, England
St. Stephen's Church is an Anglican church in Sneinton featuring Gothic Revival architecture with a tower displaying a four-dial clock. Its interior is decorated with detailed stained glass windows, and the choir stalls contain medieval misericords originally transferred from St. Mary's Church in Nottingham.
The church was rebuilt in 1837 by architect Thomas Rickman, replacing an earlier medieval structure at the site. Funding came from the Church Building Commission, which supported the reconstruction during a period of significant church building across England.
The church served as the wedding venue for author D.H. Lawrence's parents on December 27, 1875, creating a connection to British literary history. This link to the past still draws visitors interested in literary heritage and the personal stories behind notable authors.
The church retains its listed building status, which means its architectural features have been carefully preserved over time. Visitors should allow time to observe the tower's clock, the stained glass windows, and the interior choir area to appreciate the craftsmanship throughout the building.
The choir stalls feature medieval misericord carvings that were relocated from another Nottingham church and represent rare examples of religious woodcraft. These valuable pieces were moved to ensure their preservation and represent a physical connection between different places of worship across the city.
