Stocks House, Neoclassical country house in Aldbury, England
Stocks House is a neoclassical country house in Aldbury, England, with a symmetrical Georgian front and large sash windows. The main elevation shows pale masonry that underlines the clean arrangement of the building and gives it a calm appearance.
The building arose in 1773 on the site of a medieval farm called La Stok and extends over roughly 182 acres (74 hectares). The property borders Ashridge Forest, now owned by the National Trust and known for its beech groves.
Mary Augusta Ward, a Victorian writer, welcomed authors and thinkers here for literary evenings until 1920. The gatherings shaped the intellectual life of her time and turned the estate into a meeting ground for leading minds across England.
The house is privately occupied and lies near walking trails through the Chiltern Hills. Visits are possible only by advance booking through local heritage societies that occasionally organize guided tours.
Filming for the television series The Avengers took place here in the 1960s. The estate later appeared on the cover of the album Be Here Now by Oasis from 1997.
