The Spittles

The Spittles is a coastal cliff formation in Dorset stretching between Lyme Regis and Charmouth with steep rock walls. The cliffs display visible layers of blue clay and sediment from the Jurassic period.

The site was explored by paleontologist Mary Anning in the early 1800s, who discovered an Ichthyosaurus fossil here. Her work significantly advanced understanding of ancient marine life.

This coastal formation is part of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site designated in 2001. People visit to witness the layered rock and understand what life was like millions of years ago.

Check tide times before visiting, as high water can block beach access and make walking unsafe. Wear sturdy footwear and plan your exploration when water levels are lower.

After rain, the clay layers absorb water and trigger landslides that reveal new fossils regularly. This natural exposure makes the location especially valuable for fossil hunters.
