The Stade

The Stade is a traffic-free zone and sandy beach that sits at the core of Hastings, blending a shoreline for walking with shops and eateries on paved ground. The beach stretches alongside wooden fishing huts and leads toward the clifftop Old Town perched above.

This place began as a fishing port and has maintained that role through the centuries, with local fishermen still landing their daily catches directly from the shore. The wooden structures and boat-launching methods visible here have been passed down through many generations.

This spot is easy to reach on foot and provides direct access to restrooms, seating, and cafes throughout the area. Keep in mind that high tide narrows the walkable space, and visiting early in the day gives you the best chance of seeing the fishing boats in action.

Fishermen still launch their boats using wooden rollers and mechanical winches directly from the beach, a launching method that has largely disappeared from other English ports. This ancient system continues to work effectively today and allows fishing vessels to be ready for sea in minutes.
