The Story Museum, Museum in Oxford, England
The Story Museum is a museum on Pembroke Street in central Oxford, housed in a building called Rochester House. It is dedicated to storytelling and literature for children and families, with rooms themed around different story worlds, including the Whispering Wood and the Enchanted Library.
The museum began in 2003 as a virtual project before finding a permanent home in 2009, when a major private donation made it possible to move into Rochester House on Pembroke Street. That move allowed the team to develop the physical exhibitions and public events that visitors can see today.
The museum serves as a gathering place for storytelling in Oxford, with performance events that appeal to visitors of all ages. The spaces are designed to bring narratives to life and regularly host live presentations throughout the year.
The museum is easy to reach on foot from Oxford city centre, as it sits just off the main streets. Families with children of different ages tend to get the most out of a visit, and groups are best advised to book ahead.
One of the rooms, called the Treasure Chamber, was co-created with author Cressida Cowell, known for her dragon-riding book series. The room draws on her work with dragon elements woven into a hands-on installation called Story Craft.
