The Homestead, Sandiway, Grade II listed building in Sandiway, United Kingdom

The Homestead is a residential building featuring Ruabon brick construction with a rendered upper storey and Lakeland green slate roofs. The structure includes prominent brick chimneys and multiple extensions on its east side.

Architect John Douglas designed and built this residence between 1906 and 1907 on his own land in Sandiway, the village where he was born. The project represented a personal undertaking where the Chester architect applied his professional skills to create his own home.

The entrance displays a carved griffin and a distinctive motto on its decorative elements, giving the building a personal artistic character. These details reflect the owner's tastes and values from the early 20th century.

The building is located on Weaverham Road and currently operates as a private nursing home with limited access. Since it remains an active residential facility, visitors can only appreciate the architecture from the outside.

The garden side features two-storey canted bay windows, while the north front displays five bays with gabled outer sections topped by finials. These architectural details create an intricate roofline that catches the eye from different angles.
