The Devil's Den, Neolithic dolmen in Preshute, England

The Devil's Den is a Neolithic tomb built from two upright stones supporting a massive capstone that weighs around 17 tons. It sits on Fyfield Hill near Marlborough as the visible entrance to what was originally a much longer burial mound.

The burial chamber was built during the Neolithic period and marks the entrance to what was originally a 230-foot-long mound. Structural work in 1921 reinforced and stabilized the stones to ensure the monument would survive into modern times.

The name reflects a common medieval practice where Christian communities linked prehistoric monuments to supernatural forces. You can observe today how the stone structure sits in the landscape as part of this folk naming tradition.

The site stands in open countryside and is freely accessible without any entrance requirements. Come prepared with sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing, as the location is exposed to the elements and can be quite windy.

Local folklore tells of a curious practice where people would pour water into the hollows of the capstone. According to the legend, demons would drink from these pools at night, revealing how deeply such supernatural stories became embedded in the area.
