Theatr Brycheiniog, Arts centre on Canal Wharf, Brecon, Wales
Theatr Brycheiniog is an arts centre and theatre in Brecon beside the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, housed in a red brick building topped with Welsh slate. The venue contains a main auditorium with 477 seats, a smaller 120-seat studio, conference spaces, gallery areas, and a restaurant with bar for visitors.
The theatre opened in 1997 as the first arts building in the United Kingdom to be fully funded by the National Lottery. This major public investment established Brecon as a centre for arts support through national funding.
The building serves as a gathering place where local artists and visitors experience dance, music, and theatre throughout the year. It shapes cultural life in Brecon and draws people from surrounding areas who seek out contemporary and traditional performances.
The venue sits directly beside the canal and is easily reached on foot, with parking nearby and accessible entrances to all areas. Visitors find dining and refreshments on-site or within easy reach, making it simple to spend a comfortable afternoon or evening here.
From the building, visitors can see across to the Brecon Beacons National Park, and occasionally international-level performers take the stage, such as the Berlin Philharmonic wind quintet. These rare performances bring world-class musical experiences to this small Welsh town.
