Thetford Priory

Thetford Priory consists of stone ruins that include the church walls, a cloister, the prior's residence, and a 14th-century gatehouse. The structures spread across a rural site in Norfolk, showing how a medieval monastery was physically arranged.

The monastery was founded in 1103 and operated as a religious community for more than 4 centuries until it closed in 1540 during the dissolution of monasteries. Its long period of activity shows how central it was to the region's religious and social life.

The priory served as a burial place for powerful local families over centuries, which shows how important it was for the region's ruling classes.

The monastery relocated itself to the other side of the Little Ouse River in 1114 to gain more space after its original location became too cramped. This unusual move reveals how flexible the religious community was in adapting to its growing needs.
