The Mug House

The Mug House is a Grade II listed pub dating from the 15th century, featuring four distinct spaces including a back room, bar, hatch, and snug. The building shows low ceilings and timber-framed construction typical of its period, with wooden finishes throughout the interior.

The building began in the 15th century as a Church Ale House where community events took place. It has kept its role as a gathering place for over 700 years, operating as a pub throughout most of that history.

The name reflects its roots as a Church Ale House where the community gathered for shared occasions. Visitors can still see how the interior is divided into separate rooms, an arrangement that preserves the older idea of communal meeting spaces.

The pub is located near the junction of Claines Lane and Cornmeadow Lane, making it straightforward to find. It serves traditional ales alongside rotating guest beers, so there is usually something new to try on return visits.

It stands on consecrated ground and is one of only two pubs in England located within church walls, situated next to a graveyard. This exceptional location makes it a historical oddity that sets it apart from any other pub in the country.
