Tickle Cock Bridge, Railway bridge and pedestrian underpass in Castleford, United Kingdom
Tickle Cock Bridge is a railway bridge and pedestrian underpass in Castleford, United Kingdom, that runs beneath a rail line between York and Normanton. The tunnel links residential neighborhoods with the Carlton Lanes Shopping Centre and features smooth blue surfaces with modern lighting.
The original construction appeared in 1890 during the Victorian period as a narrow underpass. The cramped and low passage was replaced in 2008 by a wider and taller concrete tunnel.
Residents in the area fought successfully to keep the original name after authorities tried to replace it with something less colorful during renovation work. The walls now display bright fish paintings that make the link between housing areas and the shopping center feel more welcoming.
The passage sits within the Castleford town area and works well for pedestrians moving between residential zones and the shopping center. The lighting and smooth surfaces help with orientation even in poor weather.
Work to install the new structure required precise timing because the rail line could only be closed on December 25 and 26 in 2005. Around 50,000 pedestrians use the underpass every week.
