Tamar Bridge, Suspension bridge in Saltash, England
The Tamar Bridge spans 335 meters across the River Tamar, connecting the communities of Plymouth in Devon and Saltash in Cornwall.
The Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Company constructed the bridge between 1959 and 1961, with Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother leading the formal presentation in 1962.
The bridge represents a physical connection between the distinct cultural regions of Cornwall and Devon, replacing previous ferry services across the River Tamar.
Vehicles crossing the bridge utilize a tidal flow system during peak hours, with a capacity of 1,800 vehicles per hour in each direction.
This crossing became the first suspension bridge worldwide to be widened and strengthened while traffic continued to use it. The work allowed vehicles to keep moving across the river throughout the entire construction period.
