Todmorden War Memorial, War memorial in Centre Vale Park, Todmorden, England
Todmorden War Memorial is a statue in Centre Vale Park featuring St George standing on a globe with maiden figures in classical dress arranged around a horseshoe-shaped basin. Water spouts shaped like dragon heads emerge from the orb, creating a fountain feature integrated into the design.
The monument was designed by sculptor Gilbert Bayes in 1921 to honor local soldiers who lost their lives across three conflicts. It commemorates 659 from the First World War, 150 from the Second, and two from the Korean War.
The memorial serves as a gathering place where the community comes to remember those who died in service. Visitors can read the names of local people inscribed on the tablets, connecting them to individuals from their area.
The memorial is located in Centre Vale Park and is freely accessible to visitors throughout the day. The engraved tablets are organized alphabetically by regiment, making it straightforward to search for and locate specific names of fallen soldiers.
Two sculptures called The Lamp of Memory and The Shield of Honor vanished from the site in 1996 and were replaced with replicas in 2014. This restoration showed the community's commitment to preserving the memorial's complete original design.
