Union Street, Main commercial thoroughfare in Aberdeen, Scotland
Union Street extends approximately 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) through Aberdeen's city center and serves as a major commercial corridor featuring shops, cafes, restaurants, and office buildings along its length.
Construction of Union Street began in the early 19th century as part of an ambitious urban planning project that included building Union Bridge, which became the world's largest single-span granite bridge at 130 feet (40 meters) across.
The street takes its name from the Acts of Union 1800 and has hosted the Aberdeen International Street Market along with elaborate Christmas light displays during the festive season that draw crowds from across the region.
The street has been fully pedestrianized between Bridge Street and Market Street since July 2022, with widened pavements and designated cycle lanes improving access for visitors exploring the city center.
Local residents refer to the section from Castlegate to Holburn Junction as the Granite Mile, named for the extensive use of granite in building facades and paving stones throughout this historic corridor.
