Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College, school in Leicestershire, UK
Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College was a boarding school in Woodhouse, Leicestershire, preparing students aged 16 to 18 for study and careers in the British armed forces. The curriculum placed a strong emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, alongside structured military training.
The school opened in 1953 at Welbeck Abbey near Worksop, originally training boys for the technical branches of the British Army. It moved to a purpose-built campus in Woodhouse in 2005, widening its intake to include girls and candidates for the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, before closing in 2021.
The campus was divided into five houses, each named after a British military figure such as Nelson or Trenchard. This house system created a strong sense of community among students, with competitions and shared routines shaping daily life.
The site sits on a rural plot near Woodhouse, within easy reach of the M1 motorway by car. Since the school closed in 2021, the grounds now operate as a military installation and are not open to the public.
Although the school was funded by the Ministry of Defence, students paid no fees, as all places were covered by the government. This made it unusual within the British education system, where state-funded boarding schools are very rare.
