Wickham Market Hoard, Archaeological gold coin collection in Suffolk, England
The Wickham Market Hoard is a collection of 840 Iron Age gold coins discovered in 2008 through metal detection in a field near Dallinghoo. The coins date from 40 BC to 15 AD and display various designs and minting techniques from this ancient period.
This collection dates to the late Iron Age and was discovered by chance in 2008 through metal detection activities. The find was later acquired by Ipswich Museum, where it has remained available to the public ever since.
The coins mostly came from the Iceni tribe of East Anglia, though two were minted in Lincolnshire, showing that trade connections existed between different regions. This tells us how people in ancient times exchanged goods and moved wealth across their lands.
You can view this collection at Ipswich Museum, which houses and displays the artifacts. Plan to spend time examining the individual coins, as they show fine details and variations that reward careful observation.
This hoard represents the largest intact collection of British Iron Age gold coins ever examined scientifically by archaeologists. Its size makes it possible to understand the economic systems and trade practices of the ancient Iceni in much greater detail.
